Tax system
Understanding Australian taxes
Individual income tax is primarily administered at the federal level in Australia. The amount you ultimately keep may also be affected by the Medicare levy and certain repayment obligations.
Federal income tax
Australian tax residents are generally taxed under a progressive system where different portions of taxable income are subject to different rates.
Medicare levy
The Medicare levy may be charged in addition to income tax to help fund Australia's public healthcare system.
HELP and study loans
Certain Australian study loans may require compulsory repayments once income exceeds the applicable thresholds.
