Estimated result

Enter the settings to estimate how much you can withdraw.

Deplete the investment

Calculates the maximum withdrawal that gradually uses the capital over the selected duration.

Preserve the capital

Calculates a withdrawal designed to leave approximately the initial amount at the end of the period.

Grow the capital

Calculates a withdrawal compatible with a final balance greater than the initial capital.

Calculation Method

The calculator uses an iterative process to determine the periodic withdrawal amount needed to reach the target final balance.

Formulas Used

Net periodic return rate (rpr_p) :

rp=(1+RannualFfees100)1n1r_p = \left(1 + \frac{R_{\text{annual}} - F_{\text{fees}}}{100}\right)^{\frac{1}{n}} - 1

Optimal withdrawal search (WW) :

Find W such that Balancefinal(W)Target\text{Find } W \text{ such that } \text{Balance}_{\text{final}}(W) \approx \text{Target}

The algorithm tests different withdrawal amounts until it finds the one that leaves the target balance at the end of the period.

Balance update per period (BtB_t) :

Bt=(Bt1Wt)×(1+rp)B_t = (B_{t-1} - W_t) \times (1 + r_p)

Withdrawal inflation adjustment (if enabled) (WtW_t) :

Wt=W0×(1+i100)tnW_t = W_0 \times \left(1 + \frac{i}{100}\right)^{\frac{t}{n}}

If enabled, the withdrawn amount increases each period based on the specified inflation rate.

Amounts shown are in nominal dollars (not adjusted for inflation) unless stated otherwise.
