TFSA Contribution Room Calculator 2026

Estimate your available Tax-Free Savings Account contribution room using annual TFSA limits, unused room, previous contributions and eligible withdrawals. The calculator helps estimate how much you may still be able to contribute in 2026.

2026 TFSA limit

What is the TFSA contribution limit for 2026?

The TFSA dollar limit for 2026 is CA$7,000. This amount is added to the contribution room of eligible individuals on January 1, along with unused room carried forward and eligible withdrawals made in previous years.

The CA$7,000 annual limit is not necessarily your personal contribution room. Your available room can be higher because unused TFSA room carries forward and previous-year withdrawals are added back.

Your information

Include all contributions made to all of your TFSAs.

How is TFSA contribution room calculated?

Available TFSA contribution room generally includes unused room carried forward from previous years, the current year's TFSA dollar limit and withdrawals made in previous years, less contributions already made.

TFSA contribution room formula

Current-year TFSA dollar limit

+ Unused TFSA contribution room carried forward

+ Withdrawals made in previous calendar years

− TFSA contributions already made

= Estimated available TFSA contribution room

Does unused TFSA contribution room carry forward?

Unused TFSA contribution room generally carries forward indefinitely. You do not lose room simply because you did not make the maximum contribution in a particular year.

Example: unused TFSA contribution room

You have CA$5,000 of unused contribution room remaining from previous years.

The 2026 TFSA dollar limit adds another CA$7,000 of room, assuming you are eligible for the full annual amount.

Before considering withdrawals or new contributions, you could have CA$12,000 of available TFSA contribution room.

How do TFSA withdrawals affect contribution room?

Withdrawing money from your TFSA does not permanently eliminate that contribution room. However, the withdrawn amount is generally added back only at the beginning of the next calendar year.

During the year of withdrawal

A withdrawal does not immediately create new TFSA contribution room during the same calendar year.

January 1 of the following year

The amount withdrawn is generally added back to your available TFSA contribution room on January 1 of the next calendar year.

Example: TFSA withdrawal and recontribution

You withdraw CA$5,000 from your TFSA during 2026 after using all of your available contribution room.

The CA$5,000 withdrawal does not generally become new room during 2026.

That CA$5,000 is generally added back to your TFSA contribution room on January 1, 2027.

How does a TFSA work for tax purposes?

A TFSA is a registered account that can hold savings and eligible investments while providing tax advantages.

TFSA contributions are not deductible from your taxable income.

Interest, dividends and capital gains earned inside a TFSA are generally not taxed while they remain in the account.

TFSA withdrawals are generally tax-free and do not normally have to be included in taxable income.

Who can accumulate TFSA contribution room?

TFSA contribution room begins accumulating only when the eligibility requirements apply. Your year of birth and Canadian residency history can therefore affect your total room.

You generally begin accumulating TFSA room when you are at least 18 years old.

You need a valid Social Insurance Number to open a TFSA.

Canadian residency can affect when TFSA contribution room accumulates and whether contributions can be made without additional tax.

What happens if you over-contribute to a TFSA?

If your contributions exceed your available TFSA contribution room, the excess can be subject to tax for each month it remains in the account.

TFSA contribution room FAQ

What is the TFSA contribution limit for 2026?

The TFSA dollar limit for 2026 is CA$7,000. Your personal available contribution room may be higher because unused room carries forward and eligible withdrawals from previous years are added back.

Do TFSA withdrawals create new contribution room?

Yes, but generally not until the next calendar year. Amounts withdrawn from a TFSA are generally added back to available contribution room on January 1 of the following year.

Does unused TFSA contribution room expire?

Unused TFSA contribution room generally carries forward to future years. You do not have to contribute the annual maximum every year to preserve unused room.

Are TFSA contributions tax-deductible?

No. TFSA contributions are not deductible from taxable income. The main tax advantage is that investment income and capital gains earned inside the account, as well as withdrawals, are generally tax-free.

What happens if I contribute more than my TFSA room?

An excess TFSA amount is generally subject to a tax of 1% per month for each month the excess remains in the account. Removing the excess promptly can help stop additional monthly tax from accumulating.

Important information

Your actual TFSA contribution room depends on your eligibility history, annual TFSA limits, previous contributions, unused room, withdrawals and residency history. Financial institutions also report TFSA transactions to the CRA, which means recently displayed CRA amounts may not always include every recent transaction.

This calculator provides an estimate only. Keep your own TFSA contribution and withdrawal records and verify your information before making a contribution.
