Pension tax relief

Age-related pension contribution limits

Ireland applies age-related percentage limits when determining how much of an individual's qualifying pension contributions can receive Income Tax relief. The percentage generally increases with age.

AgeMaximum percentage of earnings
Under 3015%
30 to 3920%
40 to 4925%
50 to 5430%
55 to 5935%
60 or over40%

Earnings limit for tax relief

The calculator applies an annual earnings limit of €115,000 when estimating the age-related maximum employee contribution that may qualify for Income Tax relief.

Employee pension contributions

Personal pension contributions can help build retirement savings while potentially qualifying for Income Tax relief, subject to the applicable rules and limits.

  • The age-related percentage limit generally increases as you get older.
  • The calculator estimates relief using your entered marginal Income Tax rate.
  • Tax treatment depends on whether the contribution and pension arrangement qualify under the applicable rules.

Employer pension contributions

Employer contributions can significantly increase the amount invested toward your retirement without increasing your own contribution rate.

  • Employer contributions are included in the projected pension balance.
  • The calculator keeps employer contributions separate from your estimated employee Income Tax relief calculation.
  • Actual employer contribution rules depend on the pension arrangement and employment terms.
