How income tax works
New Zealand uses a progressive income tax system. Each portion of your income is taxed at the corresponding rate rather than your entire income being taxed at your highest marginal rate.
Progressive tax brackets
Your income is divided across several tax brackets. Only the portion of income falling within each bracket is taxed at that bracket's rate.
ACC earners' levy
An ACC earners' levy may apply to certain employment income to help fund New Zealand's accident compensation scheme.
IETC tax credit
The Independent Earner Tax Credit (IETC) may reduce the tax payable by eligible taxpayers depending on their income and circumstances.
