How income tax works

New Zealand uses a progressive income tax system. Each portion of your income is taxed at the corresponding rate rather than your entire income being taxed at your highest marginal rate.

Progressive tax brackets

Your income is divided across several tax brackets. Only the portion of income falling within each bracket is taxed at that bracket's rate.

ACC earners' levy

An ACC earners' levy may apply to certain employment income to help fund New Zealand's accident compensation scheme.

IETC tax credit

The Independent Earner Tax Credit (IETC) may reduce the tax payable by eligible taxpayers depending on their income and circumstances.

Income tax, PAYE and tax returns in New Zealand

For employees, income tax is generally deducted from salary and wages through PAYE. This calculator estimates income tax based on annual income but does not calculate an individual tax refund or final amount owing from a New Zealand tax return.

Income tax and PAYE

PAYE generally withholds income tax from salary and wages during the year. Your final tax position can depend on your total annual income and other circumstances.

Tax return and refund calculations

A tax return or refund estimate may require additional information, including PAYE already deducted, other income, credits and deductions. This calculator focuses on estimated annual income tax and take-home pay.
